In Search of Autumn

Last Sunday my husband and I went for a drive in the local mountains. I had my trusty camera in hand and he had his fishing gear primed and ready to use when the moment moved him. Together we journeyed through back roads and winding trails in our trusty ‘ole grandpa truck (green 1997 Dodge ram). Often peeking over dizzying mountain roads (why is the passenger side is always facing the edge) in search of beautiful fall colors.Anxious to find autumn's glorious rusty reds, golden hues and brightly colored leaves.

We made a few new friends

and a few that simply turned their backs on us.

fishing was good and plenty were caught and released
But, nature’s canvas was muted. Colors were pale and the mountainsides had more brown than rusty reds.

What’s going on? I asked, where is the beauty of autumn? My wonderful husband shrugged and said, “To dry babe”. Simple as that, to dry! What? We’re in the mountains and the first day of fall was the 22nd of September. Didn’t Mother Nature get the memo? But then on our way home, right there in our area, I found this!  So the mountains may not know it's autumn but our neighborhoods sure do.

Is it autumn where you live?

Love your photos - especially the deer.

This week we jumped from near 100 to low 80's! Nights are COLD - of course, this is coming from someone who wears gloves and a hoodie when it dips below about 68 degrees. No gorgeous colors yet, but I'm ready!

Not much Fall going on here!

Spectacular!

Fall is just beginning here in TX...I love the crispy air, the breezes and the big fluffy trees with leaves falling. :)

Katherine, those are great pictures. I love the colors you found on your way home. How neat to get so close to those animals. Here in Fl...well, it's been in the low 70's at night, does that count?

HI....came to visit you from Java's blog...Over 40....
Nice to visit new people and see their blogs.
I love autumn. Love the color, the crispness.
Fall doesn't last too long here as the frost comes sooner then I'd like.
Already the leaves are starting to fall.

I live in the country, see lots of deer, and moose....we have 4 horses and 2 dogs.

I am glad you had your trusty camera with you. :) The pictures are great. It is very much fall here in Michigan. Cold crispy air, pumpkins and changing leaves. The leaves are not very vibrant and are falling quickly from the trees because of dry weather, but the fields are blanketed in gold and rust colors. Very pretty!

I am so glad you saw all those wonderful animals and sites so that you could share them with us.

Loved to see it - even the animals like the autumn temps better.

Lovely photos. I take the crew regularly on drives through our rural area and seeing the wildlife and nature is always a hit.

We have been dodging rain drops this week, so hopefully the great colors will arrive soon.

Beautiful pictures. It's beginning to look like fall here in Oregon! I can't wait!

It is finally cooling down here in Charlotte, NC where I live! It has been dry here too up until this week so I think the Fall leaves will be mostly gold in color. There are slight changes but not like other years!

Beautiful photos; I only wish it looked more like fall where I live, in Georgia... It's the slightest bit cooler but that's about the only signs of fall we've got.

I asked the same question today: "Fall, where are you???" I took the boys to a pumpkin patch and nearly fainted from heat stroke, it was so hot!

Lovely pictures!

The temp is getting there here in upstate NY, but there is only one tree near us that has started to change color. Next weekend we are going for a drive to see the trees and pick some apples, then I will hopefully see some more of the beautiful orange/red trees. We do have that fall smell in the air!!

Love your blog! New to blogging, would love if you could take a look at mine and let me know what you think. I can handle the truth!! I am also meeting with an Avon rep tomorrow to become an Avon rep, yeah!!

That first photo is a beauty. They're all lovely, actually. It's very much autumn where I am (southern Ontario, Canada) and has been for quite some time. Summer ended abruptly and fall has moved right on in. Thanks for your visit to my blog today. :)

Beautiful shots! The last couple weeks in Southern IL was in 60's-70's but the last few days have been high 80's. Leaves are starting to turn.

So beautiful! We are still in the vivid color stage with unbelievable greenery. It's a gorgeous fall!

It's autumn but hard to tell here at the beach. I guess because all the tourists have gone home it's a lot less crowded with people so that's one way to tell. The pumpkins on my porch are the only ode to fall I will be having I'm afraid. Southern California isn't renowned for its changing seasons.
