A Sister For Katie

Growing up is tough, we’ll all agree to that. For some it’s tougher than others. Without getting to heavy, or calling out the little violins to soon. I will just say growing up for me was in deed tough.  I grew up far too fast and skipped over the “being a kid” part completely.

I was raised in a very strict household. Children were to be seen and not heard, etc. Only A’s were allowed and extracurricular activities had to be academically valued. Being the eldest I carried a lot of responsibilities (along with stress) and actually developed my first ulcer at a very early age (another story perhaps for another day). My younger brother is several years my junior and we lacked that wonderful sibling connection so many share growing up. No matter how hard I tried over the years we never connected. We are two people, so very different from one another. Every time I have extended my love and support it has always been rejected (do I hear violins yet?)

I used to envy the sibling connections I’d see in my friend’s families. I used to spend a lot of time alone. I often wrote in my diary about how nice it would be to have a sister to confide in. Someone closer to my age, someone to lean on, and share confidences with. I always had very strong friendships and a diverse group of friends. But, there still was no substitute for the sister I had always wanted.

A recent announcement on the Oprah Winfrey show regarding the discovery of her half-sister brought forward something I never thought I’d write a blog about…….

I too have a sister! I learned of her and met her for the very first time in 1999!  She is beautiful, talented, successful, and artistic.  She spent her whole life thinking she was an only child. Although we found each other late in our lives we now have the sister we had both wished for. We haven’t seen each other since 1999. But, we stay connected through emails, letters and facebook!
You see, she lives in Tokyo! ……………………………

You may wonder why I have a photo of  Blythe dolls on this post. My big sister’s company created Blythe.  My sister is an extraordinary woman. She has many successful ventures and is also a hula teacher. I am proud to know her and to love her and to call her my sister.

Resolutions Schmezalutions

Every year I make them, and every year I break them. So, this year no resolutions!
Instead I’ll just keep trying to…..
get rid of my menopause middle,  and
I will continue to express positive optimism.
I will continue to try and worry less.
I will continue to try and write more.
I will continue to try and wear more shoes with laces instead  of my slip ons or clogs.
I will continue to greet each new day with gratitude.
I will continue to limit my cups of tea to three.
I will continue to use, instead of look at, my elliptical machine.
I will always work at creating the best blogs, shops and websites I can.
I will continue to do the things that make me smile
I will continue to extend my hand in friendship to all who will receive it.
So, I resolve, to not make any resolutions, what about you?………

Time Waits For No One

When I was young getting from one birthday to another felt as if several years were between them. The 365 days of the calendar had appeared to double or even triple while waiting to celebrate my next year. I longed to be older, a grown up, master of my own destiny! Now my birthdays have
grown closer together somehow. The holidays come quicker, seasons quickly change, years and events speed by. Where are those long 365 days of the
calendar? When did the world start speeding up? At age 30? 40? Is this why we need to make popcorn in 2 minutes in the microwave instead of 10 minutes in a
pot on the stove? Is this why we live in a world filled with quick and hurry? Is this why we have speedy service, drive through instead of sit down restaurants, microwaves that cook a whole meal in 30 seconds? Is it because time is speeding up?On Tuesday we will celebrate our daughters 30th birthday ( she's about
2 in this photo). We will sing and cheer along with her and our five grandchildren. We will make her day special. But, how can I have a 30 year old daughter? It was only yesterday when I was being rushed to the hospital choking on the ash of the Mount St Helen’s eruption. I was eager and anxious, my nine “long” months of pregnancy and preparation were about to be realized with the birth of my child. Now my child sits in front of me draped by the loving arms of my five beautiful grandchildren and she is complaining about the passing of time.

Time and the perception of time, it’s something we all seem to have in common……… So, celebrate, make memories, and savor every moment, every experience, and every breath. Make good choices and live your best life.
The clock is ticking and time is passing quickly………………………..

Find joy in every quick passing moment and thank you for passing your time with me.Katherine

My Favorite Season

My favorite season is here! I have been excitedly awaiting crisp mornings, wearing sweaters, colorful leaves, and cool breezes. I love the romance of the season. Yes, romance. Long walks holding hands with my best friend ( husband), my furry mitten in his leather glove, walking along paths carpeted with colorful crunchy leaves. It’s romantic!

I recently read an article that declared that people who prefer Autumn are: Multi Faceted Multi-Taskers. Well that is certainly true, I’m a woman, it’s genetic you know!

Spring lovers are: Diligent Optimists, wait I’m that too!

Summer: Adaptable Extroverts….ummmm that’s me too!

Winter Lovers: Blue’s Proof Nurturers…. Okay…so that’s me too.

Well maybe the article wasn’t that accurate. But, yippee my favorite season is here! What’s your favorite season?

Movie -O -Holic

The sudden passing of John Hughes on August 6th started me thinking about all of the wonderful teenage angst ridden films he has provided to appreciative movie goers just like me, all over the globe. Being a self proclaimed “movie- o –holic” , complete with a full addiction to “movie theater” popcorn. I have no trouble providing a list of wonderful John Hughes films….

Mr. Mom, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty In Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Some Kind Of Wonderful, She’s Having A Baby, Planes Trains and Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, and the Chevy Chase National Lampoon Vacation’s series, are all amongst my favorite John Hughes films.

One thing I know for sure, aside from the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed all of these films, is the basic underlying theme that runs through most of them. Friendship, love, and joy come from often unlikely blends of people and personalities.
We are all works in progress, we all seek our place in the world, and we often discover our most comfortable fit can be in very unlikely places.

So, it is my true belief that you never know what life will bring your way. It’s best to just be open to new possibilities, friendships, opportunities, and experiences. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt to watch a good movie once in a while either!

Always and Forever

My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary and I thought I would share just a few of the things my husband does/says that makes me feel loved and shows why I love him so much.

Those few extra pounds around my middle prompt him to say “you were always too skinny anyway”.

The lines on my face remind him of my smile, and not of my age.

His arm around me at night creates the safest place on the planet.

He knows just when to pass me a tissue at a “chick flick”, and he takes me to see chick flicks!

He says things like; “You are my best friend”, “Not everyone is as open minded and accepting as you, that is one of the reasons I love you”, “You create a new path instead of following someone else’s” .He honors me with these words and many others.

He wants to buy me roses, but buys carnations instead. Because he knows how much I like their fragrance and how long they last.

He tells me I’m beautiful when I first wake up, or I get out of the shower. That’s right, without a drop of makeup on, and my hair in a towel turban, or mashed all to one side.

Lastly, when he sings the song “Always and Forever”, I always know it truly is.

Now I know this may seem all about me. But, the truth is, it’s all about him. The kind of man he is, and the kind of love he gives.
I am honored and privileged to have him as my husband, and to be madly in love with my best friend, always and forever.

15 items Or Less

I made my weekly trip to the market early this morning. My arms were filled with my well worn cloth reusable tote bags. My hand gripped tightly to the list which coordinates with the shop aisles. I walked towards the thousands of carts parked in rows at the front door and I grasped tightly to the handle of the first one in line. I pulled. But, it would not free itself from the death grip attachment it had with the thousands of other carts tightly stacked behind it. I moved to the next row and tried again, with the same result. “Are they welded together?” I wondered to myself, as I tugged hard again. It was freed! I tossed my tote bags into the cart and forged ahead. I pushed my cart towards the left of the store and my cart went right. Yes, I had the cart with the wonky wheel. Did I want to return it to the welded pile of carts? Or did I want to fight my way through the store only going in one direction? I choose the challenge and just thought that I was grateful it didn't squeak.
I made my way through the store using my list as a map. I managed to move rather quickly considering I couldn't make any left turns. I completed my mission and soon I was waiting patiently in line at the checkout. I looked down the row of checkout stands all with their lights turned off and no one working there. I stood behind ten or so people each with carts filled to the top and looked over at the checker working under the "15 items or less" sign. She was standing there bored silly, reading the covers of the magazines stacked in the racks in front of her. I glanced down at my cart and looked to her with a, "perhaps you won’t mind if I come over" look. She grined and shrugged her shoulders, while pointing at the “15 items or less” sign. After a while I began to occupy myself while I waited. I read candy wrappers, and the front covers of the celebrity gossips magazines. I noticed my envelope filled with coupons peeking out of my purse and I begin to organize my coupons by color, then by price. I tried to start a conversation with the gentlemen ahead of me only to discover that he had his music buds in his ears.

It was finally my turn at the checkout and I placed my items according to shape onto the conveyor belt. I do this so the bagger can place items into my tote bags with less effort. It helps me too, I hate it when I unpack my groceries and find my eggs on the bottom of the bag beneath the cans of soup. I watched as the bagger took random things from my well organized groups of groceries, and placed them into different bags as the checker slid them along the conveyor belt. He put each tote into a new cart. I stood there with a smile on my face as I handed the checker my coupons, paid my bill and re-bagged a few things. I pushed forward on the new cart and it went in the right direction! My smile was beaming as I made my way out of the store, squeak, squeak, squeak……………………….

Changes

Written September 2007

It's no big news to anyone that life is full of changes. Life can often blindside us with unexpected negative changes. Hitting us hard enough to knock our freckles off! The real challenge is whether we choose to see these changes as obstacles or as opportunities.

It's only human nature to meet negative changes with protest and disbelief. I've yet to meet anyone who screams out; "bring on the bad stuff!". No, no, we fight it! With our metaphorical broad sword in hand we are ready to cut down the source of change. But, change happens, and no matter how miserable we are, or how many, " why me's " are uttered, it happens anyway.

So, stop being so busy fighting the change and questioning it. Remember, sometimes it is through tears that we see the clearest. Maybe it's best to not fight so hard, just accept the things we can't change, and move forward.

Sometimes change is what we need even if we don't know it at the time, positive possibilities are just ahead.........................
