Living Green

It’s “Earth Week” and “Earth Day” is the 22nd of April. We (my husband and I) do our best to celebrate “Earth Day” every day. We have recycle bins in our garage and I take them to the recycler once a week. Our area does not have a recycle program associated with garbage pickup. It is under consideration. But, no changes have been made yet. We take our responsibility very seriously and we do what we can to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible. We both drive fuel friendly cars to lessen our carbon footprint and we encourage our family and friends to do what they can as well. We stopped buying paper napkins a long time ago and we have a large drawer filled with cloth napkins. Using cloth napkins is not only earth friendly, but helps to make each meal a little special.

I thought you might appreciate a short list of Living Green books ( in no specific order), there are several to choose from. Remember it all starts with that critical and simple first step.

Amazon Kindle

I love the idea of the Amazon Kindle. Having the ability to take several books, magazines and newspapers “on the go” when traveling is a great invention. Often times I fill my carry on bag with so many books and magazines it barely fits into the overhead compartment of the airplane. I smash and smush the bag until it fits in the required space while the line of anxious passengers wait impatiently for me to clear the aisle. A bead of perspiration forms on my forehead with the thought that I will eventually need to wedge my foot against an arm rest in order to get enough leverage to remove it when we land. Or heaven forbid, if I want to retrieve a different piece of literature during the flight.
If I were to pack all of my reading materials into my luggage it would surely take me over the weight limit every time. Road trips are just as bad. My husband smiles and grimaces when he sees me haul my bag of books and magazines to the car. He always manages to wedge it into the trunk somehow and he asks me the same question every trip,” honey do you really need all of this?” My answer is always the same, "of course, when else will I have uninterrupted time to catch up on my reading?" Okay with that being said….

For me, no piece of electronics, no matter how clever and useful ,will ever replace a book. The feel of a book's weight in your hands, the dog eared pages of a book marked with favorite passages, the smell of a dusty library book, or the feel of the crisp new pages of a book sliding through your fingers for the first time. These sensations could never be replaced by a piece of cold electronic gadgetry. But........ I do believe it is a wonderful compliment to your library and a very useful tool for traveling.

I will buy a kindle when the price comes down a bit, and I know it eventually will. I bought my original VCR for $550.00 now you can get one for 20 bucks! So I will wait patiently.

Happy reading everyone whether it is from a kindle or from a book, knowledge is power and fantasy lives in the pages of a good book.

The Joys of Being a Biblioholic

Hello, my name is Katherine and I am a Biblioholic! I am a reader, lover, collector, admirer and on occasion, writer of books.

I stand before you today to express my sincere pleasure and satisfaction in the discovering, reading and collecting of books. Not just any books, I do not randomly purchase books. I seek them out, I discover them through varying means.
I choose books with topics I have an interest in, or with appealing storylines or subjects. I choose books that will inspire me, or teach me. I choose memoirs, autobiographies, or biographies that I can read slowly and I consume every word as I learn about the author or person of interest. The joys of unleashing my imagination through a well written novel or creative sci fi tale are hard to express.

What brought this topic to my blog today? It was yesterday’s experience that inspired me to declare my addiction. Yesterday the library was selling books. That’s right, selling them. At deep, deep discounts! My heart skipped a beat at the news of a potential goldmine of literature waiting to be discovered.

Without hesitation we jumped into the car (my wonderful husband is an enabler of my love of books) and we soon arrived at the library. We descended the stairs to the belly of the library and I felt a pull , or a sense of urgency( if you will so indulge me), as we reached the library basement. I stood there for a moment and scanned the stacks upon stacks of books. Books on tables, in boxes, on shelves and on the floor!
I immediately headed to the section on art, could I be lucky enough to find my favorite subject, impressionist artists? Yes, I did! Feeling a sense of immediate gratification I knew my book search was going to be successful. My arms were soon filled with a variety of topics; art, enlightenment, Nicholas Sparks' novels, memoirs, and more. After about an hour of searching I gently transfered my literary treasures into a plain brown cardboard box and waited in line to make my purchase.
The cheerful librarian smiled as she counted the books in my box and complimented me on my excellent choices. Receiving such compliments from a librarian, a custodian of literature, is truly high praise in deed.

Drum roll please……..the total for my 30 pound box of literary treasures…….. Just $6.50!
